His k/ab rate is up from 10% or so last year to 16% or so this year. He also only has 1 hr in 59 ab's (1.69%) versus 10 in 350 last year (2.86%). He's actually had more than 30% of the balls in play fall for a hit (.312 BABIP) so in this relatively small sample size he hasn't been unlucky - his power is down and his strikeouts are up which has led to a slight drop in average.

yeah, that's the stat i was seeking--where'd you find it? in any case, it's not good news. have you seen him at the plate? anything jumping out at you? i really thought he'd be a great bargain buy this year, and i'm still (blindly) holding out hope.

I haven't had a chance to watch him play but I'll try to catch the game tonight (I have mlb extra innings). The stat is easy to get...just take (hits - home runs) / (ab - k - home runs) - that gives you the batting average on all of the balls in play.
The other thing to look at is plate discipline. Last year 36k/16bb in 350ab's. That's a low number of k's and not a terrible k/bb ratio. This year 10k/1bb in 59ab's. As I mentioned in the other post the k's are up and the k/bb ratio is WAY up.
If I had to guess he's pressing at the plate trying to hit bad pitches.
