i remember watching a special where the voice actor for homer said he was intentionally trying for a more of a growling type of voice the first 2 seasons of the simpsons, but had to change to the current voice because the growling voice would hurt his throat too much. turned out to be a good thing in my opinion, homer's current voice is much more likable.

Seasons 4-9 are what I consider the pinnacle of the Simpsons, but it's all good stuff.
Check out some of the old Simpson shorts from the Tracy Ullman Show if you want to see some really bad animation and voices. That stuff is just spooky.
