He's not suppose to be the closer for the Pirates?

Why he pitched the 8th and they gave the 9th to Roberto Hernandez today?

Take a look at the boxscore of today's game vs Cinci.

I read in the venting forum it was because they had several lefties batting in the eighth and wanted to use Gonzalez there instead. I guess they won't be commiting him 100% to being the closer depending on the situation. :-[

The batters due in the 8th were:

Womack - L
Lopez - S (kills righties)
Griffey - L
Dunn - L

It had to be due to the lefties. Marte had already pitched. Why not bring in your best pitcher to protect your lead against the other team's best hitters?

The Pirates are more interested in winning than in giving Gonzo saves.

I just hope it doesn't happen a lot this year.

Because I have Gonzalez on one of my teams and I need the saves. Clearly, the Pirates have their priorities completey out of whack.

Roberto Hernandez - R - Pirates

Roberto Hernandez worked a scoreless ninth against the Reds on Sunday to earn the save in the Pirates' first victory of the year.
Pirates manager Jim Tracy opted to go with his best reliever, Mike Gonzalez, when it made the most sense. In this case, that was the eighth inning. Hernandez got to face the weaker bottom of the Reds order in the ninth. Hernandez will probably pick up a few more saves over the course of the year, but he shouldn't have much fantasy value unless Gonzalez gets hurt. Apr. 9 - 4:29

Gonz is still the closer
