Why isn't he leading off today? Hopefully he's not hurt.

I was wondering the same thing. They were facing a righty, so you would think he'd be in the lineup.

According to MLB.com, it's just Leyland trying to get some regulars a rest and bench players some time. Of course, it you have half a brain you sit Granderson and play Thames and Monroe tomorrow when Detroit faces a lefty.

actually might make sense to get Granderson some time against lefties early in the season to see how he responds

It was because a lefty knuckleballer is typically hard on right handed guys. Obviously this wasn't the case tonight though considering he got taken deep 6 times.

leyland said Granderson is starting tomorrow

DETROIT: Manager Jim Leyland kept OF Curtis Granderson out of the starting lineup so he could get backup Marcus Thames some at-bats. Leyland said left-handed hitters like Granderson struggle against right-handed knuckleballers like Texas starter R.A. Dickey. "With Marcus, this made sense. Curtis will be back in the lineup tomorrow," Leyland said. .
