The last I saw on Ryan Freel was that he was slated to be the utility guy and not have an everyday starting job. Anyone see anything different?

he wont have the everyday job but i still estimate he will get about 450 at bats.

He will only get runs and SB's really, but I still think he is valuable to have. Just keep an eye on him and have a good backup for the position he is occupying.

I'm a bit less bullish than I was a couple weeks ago (when I was expecting 450ab's as well). I would be looking more in the 400 range now. I think he'll still get into about 120 games but some of those will be pinch running/defensive replacement appearances limiting his ab's.

I don't understand the facination with Womack but it will be Freel, Womack, Hatteberg, and Aurilia fighting for playing time in 2 spots in the order for the majority of the season.

I'm thinking of dropping him for Counsell, who came up big for me last year.

dunno, something tells me that shoulder injury is going to have him sidelined again soon. He may do well for you on your playstation 2 team ;-)

If you do, keep Freel on a watch list. He can play anywhere, and with the M*A*S*H duo of Griffey and Kearns manning the OF again, you never know. Plus, Freel and Womack are the only legit leadoff hitters the Reds have ... if Womack turns into, oh, Womack, then Freel could be back in high cotton.

Despite all I've read elsewhere, Fanball.com is reporting that they expect Freel to beat out Womack for the 2B job. It's wishful thinking on my part, but I hope they're right.

Tony Womack will start at second base and bat leadoff for the Reds on Opening Day.

It looks like Freel will be an utility player for now.
