Anyone not start their starters for their first start

Is there any evidence that pitchers pitch worse on their first season start on average?

just wondering if I should consider punting all their first starts?

Of course this would only work in a points league

I think it depends on the starter. For example, if you have Lieber and he faces Carpenter in Philly, I'd bench him. If I have Carpenter, I'm always starting him.

If you were confident enough to draft a pitcher you have to go with him unless he's got a bad match-up ie. Coors.

Having said that I've drafted Mussina and Ollie Perez in a couple of leagues and won't be giving either of them the ball early on.

But no, in answer to your original question, pitchers don't statistically have an ordinary first up performance. They get those out of their system in ST.

none that i have noticed. i once benched a guy in his first start because he was getting pounded in ST, but he threw a gem in his first regular season start. dont remember who it was, but i remember regretting benching him.

I have Brandon Webb on my roster and am considering benching him because his first start is @ Coors Field, but still thinking it over

Me too with Webb, though a guy just pointed out that Webb is a big time ground ball pitcher (#1 in majors with GB/FB ratio actually), so he shouldn't be as affected by Coors as other pitchers. Hmmm..

i was thinking about this same strategy but i need 40ip each week and i wont reach that...
