Carlos Pena released

Postby Dannomyte » Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:43 am

TAMPA, Fla. -- No shock here, but the Tigers released Carlos Pena this morning in Lakeland. They'll pay him about $700,000 of his $2.8 million contract, and the only real question is why he was in camp in the first place. He had no real place on this team, and acted like he didn't even want to be here.

Pena, acquired in 2002 in the Jeff Weaver trade, along with Jeremy Bonderman and Franklyn German. He hit .160 this spring, with 15 strikeouts in 50 at-bats.

Here is the story with a link.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have unconditionally released first baseman Carlos Pena, who has struggled during spring training.

Pena hit only .160 with one home run in 50 at-bats during the spring.

Last year he split the season between Detroit and Triple A Toledo.

In Detroit he hit .235 in 79 games, with 18 home runs. He batted .311 with 12 home runs during his time with the Mud Hens.

The Tigers announced his release in a statement issued Sunday.

Classic Tiger luck. The bum couldn't even hit enough to make him tradeable. Good bye, Carlos. Hopefully you'll turn out to be more like Tony Clark than Robert Fick.

Haha, goodbye Pena. I guess they hoped he would have a hot spring and would be able to trade him. Clearly that didn't happen. At least Bonderman has made that Weaver trade look good. Pena and German? :~(

I guess it's nice to see they finally had the guts to part ways with him. Now watch, he's going to go elsewhere within a year or two find himself as a solid starting first baseman. You know it's going to happen, but was never going to happen here.

Next up on the chopping block - Nook Logan? Some trade rumors have been going around about him.

His next team will be the Reds? Don't they have a hole at first? He could get hot and post some monster power numbers there.

What have you been hearing about trading Nook? If they could get something for him.........

Nothing more than rumors regarding Nook. Rumors simply say he isn't exactly a favorite of Leyland. I can't remember where I read it, but it said Nook and Pena were both falling out of favor with Leyland and look what it got Pena. I have to imagine the best return on Nook would be a low upside bullpen arm. Also been hearing German could be on the move, not that I'll miss him.

Man, that bench this team will have. Most of them have some speed and are pretty decent with the glove, but I can't see much offense out of them.
