My sophmore team.

Postby Tukka » Sun Mar 26, 2006 12:55 am

This is my second year playing Fantasy Baseball. I exceeded my own expectations last year by totally dominating the regular season in my league, but got eliminated early in the playoffs.

This year I don't think I did quite as well, but I'd appreciate any input as to my lineup.

It's a 10 team 5x5 H2H Yahoo league. Here's my team.

Code: Select all
   C. Ramon Hernandez
  1B. Richie Sexson
  2B. Chase Utley
  3B. Adrian Beltre
  SS. Nomar Garciaparra
  OF1. Vladimir Guerrero
  OF2. Carlos Beltran
  OF3. Grady Sizemore
Util. Cliff Floyd

   P1. Jake Peavy
   P2. AJ Burnett
   P3. Brandon Webb
   P4. Brett Meyers
   P5. C.C. Sabathia
   P6. Brad Lidge
   P7. Derrick Turnbow

BN1. Julio Lugo
BN2. Kenji Jojima
BN3. Jeff Weaver
BN4. Placido Polanco
BN5. Chris Shelton
BN6. Oliver Perez
BN7. Jeremy Hermida
BN8. Chris Young
BN9. Jose Guillen
BN10. Milton Bradley

I'm not sure if I should go with 6 SP and 1 RP or 5 SP and 2 RP, that might depend on who I'm playing, where the pitchers are playing and how many starts they get in the week (weekly roster updates, not daily), so for the time being the choice is between starting Weaver or Turnbow.

It seems like my team is full of somewhat unproven players, or players coming off big down seasons. I don't know if that means I drafted wisely, picking up bargains that were falling below their value, or if I made some mistakes.

I got a little lazy in the late rounds and might have stocked up a bit too heavily in OF, but there weren't many players catching my eye at other positions.

Opinions? Any input would be appreciated.

I think the hitting is solid for the most part. The most glaring hole you have is at 3B. Beltre sucked big time last year, and you don't seem to have anyone in case he gives a repeat performance. I'd say try to get a backup 3B.

The pitching is good, but I think maybe another closer would help you in case Turnbow falters.

Also, I'd drop Guillen. I guess you can put him on IR, but he won't be back until after the All Star break.

I like the team, and I think you'll do well.

Love that pitching staff. Peavy and Lidge are studs. Myers is very underrated. Lineup is stacked also, except for maybe Garciaparra or Beltre. I'm not high on those guys, but they are due for a comeback. Vlad is your MVP. Just ride him to the championship.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice guys, I'll take it to heart and try to reciprocate by attempting to share my (still somewhat novice) opinion with the cafe, after I've had some sleep.

Love that pitching staff. Peavy and Lidge are studs. Myers is very underrated. Lineup is stacked also, except for maybe Garciaparra or Beltre. I'm not high on those guys, but they are due for a comeback. Vlad is your MVP. Just ride him to the championship.

You should have seen my pitching staff last year, haha. It was only an 8 team league, but in the same format, I had Schmidt, Peavy, Oswalt, Carpenter, Sabathia, Penny and Weaver for SP and Lidge and Fransisco Cordero for RP, with a competitive offense to boot.

Point taken on Beltre, I had both him and Nomar last year, and I am counting on them paying me back this year. I don't think there's much on the waiver wire that looks like an attractive backup for him at the moment. I am pretty comfortable with Lugo backing up Nomar at SS and if I have to I figure I can slot Nomar as a servicable 3B if Beltre's play is absolutely horrible, that is if Nomar doesn't get injured 12 games into the season and go on the DL for half the season. Which considering Nomar's track record, is a pretty big if, I suppose.

At worst I guess I can just try and play the hot hand on the waiver wire, there should be a few low tier 3B going on streaks here and there throughout the season. Waiver transactions are instant in this league, but I'll definitely test the waters for possible trades.

Thanks again, guys.
