Which team was the first to introduce batting helmets, and which players' beaning led this team to make this innovation?

Branch Rickey helped to pioneer the helmet. I believe it was because of Carl Mays getting beaned and dying after surgery that prompted it. The pittsburgh pirates were the first team to wear them.

Rickey was indeed influential in making helmets a standard piece of baseball equipment, but you'll have to go back a bit further in time for the answer...

Yep, the Dodgers are the correct team. It did take the Pirates to change thinking around the league, though.

Mays beaned Chapman and that led to the helmets being used by the dodgers in 1941...

Well, Chapman's death could arguably be called the inspiration for all attempts to design protective headgear, but this influence was greater on Rickey than on the Dodgers. They had a closer-to-home motivation... or two.
