Interesting read on prospects

Kevin Goldstein wrote an interesting article on number of star players produced by minor league systems.


Basically he found that of the 900 prospects listed by BA in 2001 only 16 have become star players.


Only 30% even have established major league careers.


It just goes to show you that you can't believe the hype GMs and teams build up around their "blue chip" prospects.

baseball prospects are kinda like thoroughbred race horses...a lotta $$ goes into buying them as yearlings and weanlings and they are nurtured "on the farm" until they are ready to make their pro debuts...many are overhyped after some early success but few turn out to be stars and some stars come outa nowhere..ball players and horses have very similar careers including the "fringe benefits" nice work environment, screaming fans, stud duty etc
