Table talk during an auction

Postby Sticky Spice » Sun Mar 19, 2006 8:29 pm

Partly in thanks to the cafe Classifieds I was able to put together a NL-only league this year with an in-person draft. It being the first year the draft went wayyy long, but it was still a lot of fun and 8 of the 10 owners I didn't know before this league.

After the draft one of the owners said he did not like the fact that there was table talk to drive the prices up on players like "already has X spring HRs!" or "that's .60 a steal!"

This blew my mind because to me that is part of the whole point of having an in-person draft. The table talk is what makes it a blast and causes the most laughter.

I think there are some sour grapes on his part because his strategy was to wait and he waited too long.

So what do you think, table talk (including on the player being bid on) all part of the fun or unsportsmanlike?

I think table talk is great, but there's a fine line between casual and disruptive.

Table talk definitely makes the auction what it is. My league participates in all of the types of table talk listed and it just gets hilarious. It drives up prices sometimes and if it does, more power to the talker. Of course there is a line where the person needs to just stop talking and if it is reached, we don't hesitate in telling them to shut up, but it's all in fun.

I actually shut the hell up during our live draft this year b/c I had so many guys that I was after falling into my lap and most of my evil plans seemed to work and I kind of got nervous and said to myself 'you got him him him and him, there's no way nobody's gonna pick him but don't SAY ANYTHING that might tip them off!!' and it kept working pretty much the whole time. Maybe the draft was less fun but I'm pretty jazzed about my team...muwahahahaha... :-D

I don't have any problem w/ anybody else doing it though, it was mostly me. Whining afterwards b/c somebody bid your guys up is just too bad, IMHO...
