The REAL issue with Willingham

Postby chung8 » Sat Mar 18, 2006 2:10 pm

Will Willingham play the majority of his games at LF or Catcher this year? I honestly think that if he were to be the everyday starter at LF he'd be a much better option, granted my league already has Willingham eligible at catcher. Any have some inside scoop on this issue?

I have no inside info but according to MLB.com every appearance Willingham has made this spring has been at C or DH. If Girardi was seriously considering him for LF I would think he would have made a couple of appearances there.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

If Stokes makes the team as the starting LFer then Willingham probably won't get much action there.
I think there are a few reasons why he hasn't played there yet this spring. He's had some back spasms. So that limited his playing time despite the position. Also, the Catcher position is harder to grasp than LF. Girardi has been working with him closely there. There's just so much a catcher has to digest before he can call a game. LF is cake in comparison.

According to MLB.com....

MLB wrote:A solid Minor League hitter, Willingham is proving himself capable on defense and has a good lead on Olivo.

and

MLB wrote:With prospect Jason Stokes now in the running for the left field spot, Josh Willingham is out of the battle, since the Marlins are happy with the defensive progress he is making as the everyday catcher.

Wow, I didn't think Stokes had much of a chance coming into this year.
Be excellent to each other.

Rotoworld this morning reported that Girardi said that as of right now he has no plans to put Willingham in the OF and that as of now, he's the full time catcher (130 games) ;-D

I don't see how him having OF eligibility negatively affects his value. That said, his fantasy value is at C. There will be much better OF options than him.

According to Rotoworld:

Josh Willingham was given a vote of confidence by manager Joe Girardi, but has yet to be named the team's No. 1 catcher.
Willingham has yet to play the outfield this season and Girardi said there are no plans to play him there. Girardi said this about his potential catcher, "''He's still a viable everyday catching candidate, so if you're an everyday catching candidate, the chances of you playing in left field aren't real good. ``If you're catching 130 games, you're usually not going to run a guy out there on his off day.''
