i don't think that's what it was. $3000-5000 sound about right for the damage a big city truck would cause to a car. he just want someone else to pay for his genetic inferiority.
Maybe they should pay the claim and then fire him for negligence. He's a garbge man, so it's not like it's some high profile, high paying job that he can replace easily or anything.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'd pay the claim and fire him.
i read a similar story a while back, that may or may not have been true, but basically the owner of a small manufacturing company lost his finger at work or something and sued himself and won getting a large insuracne settlement

That is how insurance farud works. Maybe the car was already damaged, and he just claims the truck damaged it. Maybe he is going to take the money and not get it fixed.
