Alright, so I'm in a league that counts both holds and saves, however, they are of equal value. I'm thinking of a new strategy where I basically punt saves and hold out on holds guys and draft the top ones later. I plan on focusing on hitting and SP early on and waiting to draft guys like Shields and Duchscherer later on. This is also a league with a lot of different categories...14 hitting, 12 pitching. I just drafted a team using this strategy and think it's a very solid team. Anyone have any input?
I actually did this in a 16 person auction league earlier this year...getting S.Shields, J.Rincon, S.Torres, and B.Medders for a grand total of $16 when top closers went for ~$20. Holds are just as valuable and MRs give great peripherals and Ks making them of great value.

With that many stat categories you pretty much have to punt something or other.
Although if holds is a cat, I wouldn't count on being able to get Shields or Duchschurer too late. They will both help in probably every cat you have except for saves and wins.

Echo that. IMO if the competition on that league is up to par, then you shouldn't be able to get the closers OR the top RP in the late rounds if people draft properly.

i think you can pencil Shields in for at least 5 or 6 Ws or the the course of the season... same goes for most other full-time MRs

The only difference is that you will have a lot more luck grabbing holds off of the WW than you will trying to grab Saves.

Except that, that was exactly what he was able to do. Besides there are a decent amount of stud setup men (timlin, fransworth, linebrink to name just a few).
