Well, Heilman will probably be out of Mets rotation then. Cards would counter with Reyes, Ponson, and Wainwright with last 2 spots, it could be worse I think.
If Marquis were to have been traded, don't you think it would have happened already? There was tons of interest in him during the Burnett negotiations because everyone and their mom knew that Marquis was on the first plane out of town had Burnett signed with the Cards.
He didn't, though, and the team has been noticeably silent regarding any of the old offers that were around before Burnett signed. Why do you think that is? It's because Jocketty is smart enough to know that as bad of a headcase as Marquis is, without him, Ponson and Reyes have no reason to compete for a spot - they would both be virtually guaranteed it. And if there's anything Jocketty and LaRussa hate, it's just putting a guy on the team.
Don't believe me? Look at 2B over the last few years. The Opening Day starter has been a toss up until they announced the lineup for three years running.
Don't be mislead by a rumor because this is the only fact: Marquis isn't leaving town unless the Cards are certain they are getting a dependable starter in return.
I too don't see them trading Marquis, but it's interesting to note that of Wainwright, Reyes, and Ponson, Wainwright has looked the best in ST. He's been very consistent and has looked pretty good.
While I don't see it happening, if Wainwright and Reyes both end up starting after a Marquis trade, I wouldn't be shocked.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades...or a game of fake heart attack.
Marquis is an average at best pitcher that has been saved by the team with the best defense in baseball the last few seasons. He has problems keeping his WHIP under 1.4 even with that defense and he doesn't K very many people. So we have a pitcher that doesn't have good control or good stuff. The only reason his WHIP fell below 1.4 last year was a 27% hit rate which he won't repeat most likely and some pretty strong ground ball tendencies which keep his HR's down.
That mets rotation is terrible if Pedro goes down so I can see where they would want to make this trade. I really don't think the cardinals lose much going from marquis to ponson.
