McCarthy needs an injury to start for the White Sox this year, he is the 6th SP right now. As for Reyes he has a good shot, but will need to beat out Sidney Ponson for the 5th spot.
I think reyes has a good shot of making the rotation but with the depth in the WS rotation, i don't see mccarthy gettin in without some sort of injury. Mabey middle relief
The McCarthy situation perplexes me, why pay Vaz big $$$ when McCarthy has perhaps more upside for a fraction of the price. If the Chisox were shopping, I'd guess they'd try to deal him but we've been reading about McCarthy for a while now and he doesn't seem to have a shot.
All Reyes has to do, OTOH, is leave a case of beer in Ponson's locker and BAM, he's in there. I think that stuff wise, Larussa's management style MIGHT have a shot at bringing Ponson back but Reyes seems to have a TON of potential and not really much more to learn in the minors. I was kind of wanting to get him but he got picked up by guys in my drafts so I couldn't grab him.

You can never have too much pitching depth.

unless a Sox starter totally implodes during ST, McCarthy has no chance of being in the rotation to start the year. Sox brass has not indicated otherwise.
Some people get the feeling that management would prefer to open the year with Ponson as the #5, and fellow prospect Adam Wainwright is having a good spring so far, so Reyes has some work to do yet.
I'm willing to bet neither start the season in the starting rotation. However Reyes is more likely to make it mid season, McCarthy needs an injury... Reyes just needs Ponson to pitch like he usually does.
Both will almost certainly have an opportunity before the all-star break, and probably a lot sooner. How many teams make it until July without having at least one SP knocked out due to injury? I am betting less than 10%.
I've removed Reyes from my SP rankings entirely as there's no sense in rostering a guy who is probably going to start the season as a long reliever. McCarthy wasn't there in the first place because he's the odd man out in Chicago still. Both are very talented and could put up mid round value in full seasons, but not getting the opportunity yet. Great guys to put on your Watch lists.
