According to the book, Bonds, in comments to his mistress, Kimberly Bell, often dismissed McGwire with racially-charged remarks such as, "They're just letting him do it because he's a white boy." But Bonds looked at McGwire and his hulking physique and decided he needed to dramatically increase his muscle mass to compete with him.
Wasn't Sammy Sosa competing too? Bonds would only make that comment if Mac were there only one. If I remember correctly, Sosa hit 60 first, it was a pretty even race. And don't say it's not understandable that player with the best AB:HR ratio ever ended up with the most.
Theirs was a volatile relationship. Bell retained answering machine recordings of him after he threatened to kill her, remarking that if she disappeared no one would be able to prove he even knew her.
You can't make that claim without playing the tape. Wow these guys are going for deep wounds.

The "writers" are claiming his motivation to take the "super regimen" of drugs was fueled by the MLB allowing a player to break 'the record' only because he was white. The problem is Sammy did it too, so they have no point.

McGwire led the race most of the year, and through the middle of June Sammy wasn't even a factor. Remember it took Sosa's MLB record of 20 homers in one month to even bring him into contention. If memory serves prior to that point it was a "race" between Big Mac and KGJ.
About the time when Griffey dropped back is when Sosa had his "magical" charge, but he still trailed McGwire through July and August, so the focus on actually breaking the record was all on Mac. It wasn't until Sosa really came close to McGwire that focus switched between the two.
One question - did you read the article and the supporting articles published on CNNSI today? I don't possibly see how you could support Bonds regarding the Steroid question if you do.
