Utley or Figgins

Postby rfa94wp98 » Mon Mar 06, 2006 5:44 pm

I have the second pick in a 9 team league scoring R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS. I'm taking Pujols first, but when my next pick comes around, I'm thinking of taking either Utley or Figgins.

Would this be a stretch for either (17th pick overall)? I already know the guy with the 1st pick is going to take two of the following three - Utley/Figgins/Reyes - with his 2nd and 3rd round picks (18th and 19th picks overall). He told me so.

Do you guys think there will be better players available around picks 17 and 20? What would you guys do?

I'd go with Utley personally over Figgins, although I have Reyes and Rollins ranked higher than either of them around the 17th pick, along with Adam Dunn.

You would be wrong...

Figgins in a standard 5x5 was more valuable than Utley last year.
You have no frame of reference, Donny. You're like a child who walks into the middle of a movie...

Remember that Utley didn't get to play the whole season. He wasn't full-time until they dealt Polanco. I would take Utley over Figgins, and I don't think it's that close either.

I have them ranked pretty close to each other, but Utley is #17, and Figgins, I have as #21.

I would go with Utley. He won't steal 55, but he'll steal 15-20, maybe more.

It depends on who your first couple of picks were... obviously if you took crawford in the first round then you probably should target Utley. But overall I'd rather have Figgins

I'm absolutely torn between Utley and Figgins, but after I get Pujols, I'm thinking that Figgins will be more valuable to my team. Is this misguided thinking? I also like Figgins position flexibility.

Seeing as I'm thinking about my 2nd and 3rd round picks, where I should just be taking the best player available, who do you guys see being available around the 17th and 20th picks that are more valuable than the top two-baggers?

Good insight. That's why it's hard to make a master draft sheet. You might have mostly power and want to get speed later or you might have speed early and start to focus on power. Adjust your sheets accordingly during the draft.

I'd personally go with Utley, although it would be easily justifiable going with Figgins as well. I think Figgins is a bit more proven, but I just really like Utley's nice mix of speed, power and contact. I like both of them a lot, though.........Try to grab Utley and then on the swing around, grab another big bopper, like Hafner, Dunn, Berkman or Konerko. Or Beltran if he's still around!
