nope, very close, Cummings was the first pitcher to use the curve ball in a amjor league game.

I was positive it was Candy Cummings. I'm pretty sure I have a reference to it in a book - 'The Physics of Baseball' - perhaps. Great book if you haven't read it.

Today, in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, there is a plaque that reads: Candy Cummings, inventor of the curve ball.

Not sure we'll get a definitive answer to this one... Cummings is most often credited, but Goldsmith never gave up his claim, and a fairly substantial number of others were mentioned at one time or another. This is one dispute that might never be laid to rest...
