Punting Wins/K's....is it possible?

Postby Sensei » Fri Mar 03, 2006 4:34 pm

Ok, so I've played tons of leagues, and I've never really punted a category. I've seen people punt saves and steals with limited success, but I've never seen someone punt something huge and I decided to try it. So, I drafted no starting pitchers with the exception of Liriano (last round, possible trade bait) and plan on starting none. In my standard 5x5 public 12-team Roto, I'll lose Wins and K's, but I stocked up on decent relievers headed by Lidge and Gagne (with Baez to back up LaD). 5 solid relievers should win me saves, along with great ERA and WHIP numbers, so I could possibly get three 12's and two 1's for pitching. My offense is pretty good, since I didn't grab any early starters, especially in SB's with Figgins and Reyes, and Tavaras as trade bait. I have decent power with the possibility of trading some speed for another good power/average guy halfway into the season if I can get a lead in steals, plus I'll keep an eye on my saves lead and can trade away a closer if my numbers are already solid (and I'll look to pick up more closers as appointed).

So, what do you think my chances are of fininishing top 3? I'd have to dominate offense to have a chance at 1st with 38/60 possible pitching points, so any suggestions as to good trade ideas? Will reply to your roster in return. Thanks!!!

I've never tried to get in a Rotisserie style league and do this before... But after reading what you just said, this may work... Surprisingly...

For this to work you're going to have to absolutely kill on offense. I like your speed and I don't think you'll have a problem wiining that unless somebody has some sort of combo of Rollins, Damon, Bay, etc..., etc... Power will be decent but you might struggle. You can definitely upgrade at 3B. There's just too many guys out there that will give better production than Mora and Lowell. Wilkerson might be a nice surprise in Texas. Alou should be good off the bench, especially if Bonds is back at full strength. If I were you, I'd definitely target someone who has good power at 3rd and try and dump Mora and a speed guy for some power. Overall, I don't like your chances, but at least it should be interesting.

Yeah, you can't win this league. In my experience, three 12s is almost impossible to overcome, and you just don't have the power to do it. I don't think you'll take 1st in any offensive category except speed, and I'm skeptical you can even get top 3 in the other offensive categories (especially average...your team is actually pretty weak there). So, while this team will definitely have an interesting ride, I think even a top 3 finish is a longshot.
