Question on basketball rules...

Postby Nomar4prez » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:48 pm

Just a really quick question for any referees here or anybody who knows basketball rules well.

If, after a foul is committed on a shot, that shot is goaltended by the team who took the shot, what happens? I was wondering b/c it happened in a recent game I watched (not professional), and the referee gave the ball to the opposing team.

My thought whould be that the shot would be considered unsuccessful, and the player would be allowed to take the two(or three) free throw attempts as if he had missed the shot to begin with.

The basket should count, and the shooter given a free throw to try to convert the three point play.

I think you misread the post. ;-)

Note that the shot was goaltended by the team that took the shot.

You cannot goaltend your own team's shot and expect it to count. ;-) That would make baseketball even easier than the dunkfest it currently is. :-D

yeah if the offensive team goaltends teh shot, there is still a foul but the basket does not count.

**Funny basketball rule if a foul is commited on a shot and the shot is blocked it does not count as a block, yet if it went in it would count as a basket.

this actually happened in the Marquette vs. Louisville game on Weds., MU player was fouled while tipping a ball back and it was called offensively goaltending. They waived off any points for the basket and the MU player that was fouled shot two free throws even though he offensively goaltended
