I was curious about how to get my site to pop up better in search engines. By no means am I expecting it to be top billing, but for it show up at all would be nice.

I know you can put info in meta tags but I also read that those don't factor into things as much as they used to. Are there any tricks you can do with that to make your site pop up better? I know there are places that say they will help your site be seen by search engines for a fee, but I'm looking for something more in the price range of $0.

Meta tags don't factor into Google much anymore because the Googlebot (and Alta Vista) ignores them. They have zero impact on your relevancy.

Quick tips in no particular order:

Get good incoming links from "Google-important" pages.
Use ALT tags for every image.
Use descriptive text link instead of image links.
Use descriptive page Titles.
Improve your keyword density.

yeah your keyword density will actually make a dececnt difference, its a great deal of petty work, but all the options mentioned above will help out quite a bit.
