During my reply to the bass thread, I realized that this could be a good topic.
My top songwriters (in some kind of order):
McCartney
Lennon
Townshend
Marley (obviously Bob)
Dylan
Richards/Jagger
Page/Plant
I didn't separate the Stones and Zepplin guys b/c one guy wrote lyrics and one guy wrote the music (generally).
Lots of others to consider...
Edit: I misspelled "reply" in the original.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Axl Rose
No particular order:
Jagger/Richards
Lennon/McCartney
Waters/Gilmour
Dylan
I leave those guys together just because they're from the same band.

As for lyricist Neal Peart wins
so I guess that would be Peart, Lee Lifeson
Some of the greatest song writers ever are:
Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Motown baby. They probably have more hits than lennon and Mcarthy.
Think Michael Jackon had to be on the list too.
