Veteran pitcher Pedro Astacio signed a one-year contract with the Nationals on Monday, two days after the team learned Brian Lawrence would be out until the All-Star break with a torn muscle in his throwing shoulder. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Our View
Lawrence was expected to compete for a spot in the Nationals starting rotation and Astacio figures to do the same. The 36-year-old was 6-10 with a 4.69 ERA in 24 combined starts last season for the Rangers and Padres.
I'm guessing he got a major league deal because the Reds and Padres were only offering a minor league deal.
