No, Landis was from Ohio. His father had suffered a wound at Kennesaw Mountain in the Civil War; thus the name. (I have no idea why the second N was left off, though.)

I remember when ESPN used to say where Dick Trickle finished every race until he sued them.

Sued them? For what? They were simply amazed that a man with that name got over all the teasing he got from the other boys in elementary school and went on to have a productive life!

He sued ESPN. They gave in and stopped reporting on where he finished every race but for a month afterwards instead of Dick Trickle finished in 32nd place they just said You Know Who finished in 32nd place. Classic.
