Claypool auditioned for Metallica after Burton died. The only reason I can think that he would've been passed up is because he didn't suit their style. Still it would've been interesting to hear what kind of influence he would have had on the band.

WOW, that WOULD have been awesome!! 'oh, we're too much of a McBusiness to risk our marketshare by taking a chance...'= blech...
I'd kind of have to vote for the Ox though, I downloaded some old who stuff recently and he's got some chops. Paul McCartney is a close second but clearly did not feel obligated to toss any chops out as was more of a song guy than a bass guy.
