Basically on draft day, don't be surprised if a player with say a SD of 10 is taken 10 picks earlier or later than your ranking, and anything more or less on either side could be a stretch or a fall.

Update

Postby btaylor1978 » Wed Feb 22, 2006 2:29 pm

Just so everyone knows, another update has been posted to the rankings, which includes another source. I'll be updating the rankings a few times a day between now and the start of the season.

thats sort of it. if a player's rankings had a normal distribution and he had a SD of 10, 68% of the time his rank was within plus or minus 5 of the average.

it can get a little more complicated if its a skewed distribution.

Darn, I thought it was going to be projections that incorporated SD. Not bad though. I haven't seen ADP SD before either.

Grady Sizemore will have more value than Jason Bay regardless of draft position

Aramis Ramirez in 155 G will hit over .300 40 HR 110 RBIs

Brian McCann will have more value than Jorge Posada regardless of draft position

It might make a little more sense to put the coefficient of variation (s.d/mean) rather than the s.d. The CV gives you the variation in ranking as a percentage of the player's mean ranking.

There is no mention as to the league configuration that these rankings were taken from or made for. For example, the number of players per position in a yahoo default league is different than the number of players per position of a traditional 2 catcher, 5 outfielder league. Different league configurations = adjustments to rankings as positional scarcity dynamics change and replacement level values at all categories change.

Perhaps the author of this thread could shed some insight on this.

Being that his rankings are an average of multiple sites...it probably varies...but overall you get a good indication of a players overall value...

Great list!
