First of all, I love Dell.
Second, CD drives are modular; your best bet is just getting the module:

Check ebay and froogle for better prices. I think that's the way to go though.

The problem with laptops is that upgrades are soo expensive...I'd go with the external
Or get one for the desktop and just network it
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

Seriously ACS, I hear ya; I want to get a gig of RAM for my Inspiron 8600, and Dell wants 166 bucks. Buzzkill!

It's not hard at all if you know what you're doing... i work with Dell notebooks all day so I have it down pat and I have the right tools. Most notebooks have the RAM DIMMs under the keyboard which can be a pain; you have to remove the bezel (which is the hardest part) then some screws for the keyboard. After that it's smooth sailing and even fun! The memory is kind of spring-loaded into the slot, so when you pull apart the tabs that hold it in, it "pops" up so you can pull it out.
I think old notebooks have memory bays underneath that are even easy to access.
