Mauer's been a great average hitter, and on pace for 15/80/80.
McCann was doing just as well, if not better than, Mauer when he got hurt Probably won't last, but I guess it's worth mentioning.
The point is there are other catchers you can grab a lot later (McCann, Barret, etc.) who can come close to Mauer's numbers, and grab a stud in the 5th/6th round.
If you want to replicate Mauers numbers: Just don't draft him and take Baldelli in the last round. I guarantee he will replicate, if not surpass Mauer's numbers this season.

Easy to say that now...but there was no gaurantee Hernandez would be great. I took Mauer in the 5th knowing what I was getting, and enjoy every minute of 1st place.

Catcher 1. Jason Varitek, Red Sox 448,894 2. Ivan Rodriguez, Tigers 398,852 3. Jorge Posada, Yankees 337,969 4. A.J. Pierzynski, White Sox 256,308 5. Victor Martinez, Indians 256,148
Hmmmmm
A little bit of logic. The All Star voting does not represent the best players. 8 of the 9 AL slotrs are right now held by Red Sox or Yankees. These players are most popular. Mauer plays for the Twins, who do not have a big fan base. Therefore, he isnt getting many votes, though he surely is doing better than VTek this year.

Nice try.
Joe Mauer has limited power (at this stage of his career), limited speed (for a 5th round pick), will end up with about 130 games played this year, is an injury risk, and plays in a terrible lineup.
Ramon Hernandez has been playing alot longer than Mauer. He has more power, hits for a solid average, plays in a better lineup, and he can be picked 10 rounds later.
Not only is Hernandez more valuable 10 rounds later, but I'd rather have him, barret, Varitek, Posada, Johjima.. The list goes on.
Also, Mauer is in his 2nd year, you don't know what you are going to get out of him.
