Victor Martinez called up

Postby TheRock » Sat Jun 28, 2003 4:06 am

Rotoworld: "Indians recalled catcher Victor Martinez from Triple-A Buffalo.
The leg injury must not have been serious at all. Martinez will take over as Cleveland's starting catcher and could quickly become their cleanup hitter. Expect him to have a major fantasy impact, as he's capable of batting over .300 with decent power. He's worth picking him up in shallow mixed leagues."

What do you guys think? Worth taking a chance on? Could he be better than Lieberthal?

I'm surprised that a bigger that there hasn't been a bigger response. This is big news. Do you know when this was posted to rotoworld?

Keep in mind, he IS a rookie catcher, and he did struggle initially at his introduction to AAA this year, so his chances of making a fantasy impact are minimal. He has always hit for good average, but thats not the sort of thing that carries straight from the minors into the majors, but comes with time. I'd say he's only worth a look in AL-ONly leagues or 20 team NL/AL Leagues.

It doesn't take much to make a fantasy impact as a catcher. Short of Javy Lopez most catchers have been pretty dissapointing this season at an already shallow position. That is why he's worth looking at in deeper ML universe leagues.

It's totally BS that he went straight to FA instead of waivers on yahoo. But then again, Yahoo is free, so I'll shut up.
