Who gets the holds?

What type of RP is it that usually gets the most holds? I would think that it would be the set up man but a player like Duchscherer only ende3d up with 10 holds last year. Do specialists tend to get more hold (Scott Eyre etc.)? Please help?

Holds are very difficult to project, because there are often mutiple opportunities for holds, multiple pitchers who can get them, and roles change frequently. Still, many teams have their go-to guys for the 7th and 8th innings, and their LOOGY (left-handed one out guy). These are the key people to target for holds. Rather than focus exclusively on their potential for holds, look for guys that are good pitchers.

Duchscherer was one of those guys that played multiple roles during the year, and the A's are one of those teams that tend to be less anal about when they use pitchers. Even though he only had 10 holds, like many set-up men, he contributes to your cats in multiple ways--7 wins, 5 saves, 2.21 ERA, and a WHIP below 1.00. I'd rather have him than somebody who will give me 25 holds, but a 1.4 WHIP and 4.5 ERA.

Well said!! Holds are perhaps the most difficult stat to project because of changing roles and the actual rule for how a pitcher gets credited with a hold. My main league uses Holds as a stat and I pretty much stick to looking at guys who are not starters and not closers, but who ARE good pitchers. More often than not, those types of players will get you a respectable number of holds and they (hopefully) won't destroy your other numbers. The best ones will usually pick up some vulture wins and the odd save and be decent to great K guys.......
