i wouldn't touch pedroia. he's not strong enough nor fast enough to put up 15-15, much less 10-10 this year. and unless he's hitting over .300 as a rookie, he's pretty much useless. pedroia has two things going for him: he has a marketable name and he's a prospect for a marketable team, which makes him marketable. that's why people talk about him. but you shouldn't.
as for zumaya - a detroit sportswriter wrote that there's a 50% chance he breaks spring training as a setup guy. zumaya, himself is open to pitching in the pen. verlander, unless he hurts himself is pretty much guaranteed the number 5 rotation spot. with zumaya, i think if he pitches real well in ST, he gets a bullpen spot. if he pitches poorly in ST, i think he goes back down to AAA to log on innings as a starter down there. either way, i think his ML role is in the pen. his makeup (excitable), mechanics (violent), and repertoire (2 ML pitches, not 3) make him a perfect fit there.
who knows. if todd jones reverts to being pre 2005 todd jones, and fernando rodney & frankie german are still fernando rodney and frankie german, and with jamie walker being a lefty specialist, zumaya may even be a deep sleeper for saves this season. so i'd take a flier on him.
