Radke or Johan...Not as Clearcut (for some)

Postby phillibuster » Mon Jan 30, 2006 10:13 pm

Reading this and remembering last seasons opener, I really think there may be some brass in Minny that think Radke is superior to Johan...whats up with this? I sense indecision, enough with the respect already...amazing..."No. 1 guy now"?????

2004 Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana will make his first Opening Day start for the Twins this season.
Santana was held back last year so that Brad Radke could start on Opening Day. "Santana is definitely the No. 1 guy now," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's the Cy Young winner and the whole package. But Radke's been the No. 1 guy here forever. He's been one of the better pitchers the Twins will ever have, and this plan is out of respect for both of them." After following Santana in the rotation, Radke will pitch the home opener his second time through. Jan. 30 - 4:16 am et

Radke should lay in puddles for Johan...unbelievable. Oh..and no offense Brad.

This was more about respect the organization had for Radke and his tenure with the team than knocking Santana's abilities.

I didn't say anyone was knocking Santana's abilities, but more implying that someone was in the sack with Radke.

Brads 11-8 in 2004 got him the opening day start in 2005 over Johan's 20-6.

I'm all about respect...however...Johan's is past due...

I dunno, does it really matter who gets the opening day start?

My favorite Santana story was that he gets ready for games by playing the team he's matched up against on his Playstation the AM before the game.

I didn't know that...that is classic.

The big deal, is that it is about respect for the players...Johan deserves the opening day start. The #1 gets opening day in most cases.

people keep complaining about how greedy players are when they leave via free agency rather than stay at home, but when an organization goes out of its way to show respect to a player that has been with them for as many years as radke has, the organization gets ripped?

common, now. i'm glad they're doing it like this. if nothing else, it's a signal to johan and the other individuals that they're playing for an organization that respects it's veterans. and to be honest, that's the type of oraganization i'd like to spend my career with.

Radke recently alluded to the fact that this may be his final season. Theres no debate here as to who is better (Johan's the MAN). If you want to find out who a organization thinks their best pitcher is, look at who they start game one of the playoffs not opening day.

I agree. JOhan should have a long and possible HOF career. I don't mind the Twins deferring to one of the guys who has made them successful for many years.

Johan will get his time to shine.
