The Padres are trying to entice Mike Piazza with the promise of putting him in the cleanup spot when he's in the lineup.
"Mike still thinks he can catch 70 to 80 games," GM Kevin Towers said. "We'll also use him as our designated hitter against American League teams on the road. And he could play first base against some left-handed pitchers." Philadelphia appears to be the primary competition for San Diego right now, though the Phillies probably wouldn't have as substantial of a role for him.

Hmm...I'm not sure what to think of this one.

He's terrible defensively, and in a pitcher's park like Petco any extra base (such as a stolen base) could play a large role in any one game. He's also incredibly slow on the basepaths, something that, I think, wouldn't work in Petco given the large power alleys.

I suppose he is an upgrade over Doug Mirabelli and David Ross, though.

You guys have David Ross? I didn't know that. He got cut from his Dominican team last fall. You know you suck when you can't even make a winter ball team.

I just read that Piazza agreed to the deal...1 year for $2 million.
