Ok, so it's not the same sport, and maybe it will show me in a bad light for thinking so, but does anyone else find seemingly dozens of articles just like this one EACH DAY sort of annoying? I mean, I understand that there are some issues out there, but I feel like some of these guys want people to be hired on race and race alone....
Now, I'm no racist, and I feel that the best man for the job is the best man be he white, black, red, or green. But please, stop shoving it down my throat...
There is a relevant and intelligent discussion to be had here. I did a report on this subject for my racism in college athletics. Great Class.
The point that Smith is trying to make here is that there is a pre-conceived notion of stacking or vertical social mobitlity. Basically the consensus by various sports sociologists is that Black people are seen as incapapble of taking prominent leadership roles such as head coach, general manager or owner.
In various sports black people are relegated to supporting roles rather than leadership roles. Rare is the case that there are black pitchers and catchers in baseball. An example of this was that Jerome Williams vs. Dontrelle Willis last year was the game's first African-American v. African American in many years.
In basketball Point Guards are generally viewed as being white though there are obvious exceptions. Centers are also generally viewed as white. Hockey is a Canadian sport ansd mostly white to begin with but most centers and goalies are often supposed to be white.
In football although there are blacks quarterbacks they come under heavy scrutiny for being runners first rather than passers. In addition black heavy athletes are encouraged to play on the defensive line rather than offensive.
A lot of this stuff is pre-conceived notion but a lot of it is makes sense. There were only 3 african-american coaches in all of D1 NCAA football in 2005. 3.
The debate is still relevant today and should be discussed. Are blacks underqualified for central leadership positions ore are they being overlooked? I favor being overlooked heavily and just to clarify I am a white male who attends one of the most integrated schools in the country in Temple University.
Forget the man crush. I drop what I'm doing to watch Zack Greinke pitch.

ignoring racism won't make it go away
I want to see mathematical proof that racism exists in college sports.
If you examined the number of applicants of each race and compared those % to the % of each race with a job in the sport, I'm confident it would prove that racism doesn't exist in college sports.
People are too quick to point out the color of skin as the explanation of why things are instead of looking at the greater picture, such as the surrounding circumstances of each individual case.

Good point on the surrounding circumstances on each individual cases. Much research has been done though Marver on some of those subjects. It can be found in a compilation of essays in a textbook that I got for my class i took which name escapes me since I'm not in my room, but in my girlfriend's. As soon as I get it I can tell you on facebook or even ship it to you if you are that thoroughly interested.
Some cases the results are inconclusive, while others yield very clear results of minority discrimination.
