Earliest would probably next year. I think he'll be getting some playing time this year though.

he can handle himself at the dish(hit .258 in 159 AB's as a 19 or 20 yr old in 03) He just cant make the plays at SS. Apparently, he's winging throws all over the freaking place. Its probably some slight mechanical problems combined with a loss of confidence.

If he works out these problems in ST and early in the year, he could get the call up a month or 2 into the season. If he gets up, he'll probably hit, but the Rays want to make sure he doesnt pull a chuck knoblauch before they get rid of lugo

The TB outfield is PACKED right now, and they don't even have a place for Gathright at thos point.

That is not really a option. Rocco, Crawford, and Young are the outfield of the future. Upton will have to play the infield somewhere. He definitely has the ability tools wise to play the infield, he just has to get the mind set to play SS. With Cantu at 2b, we need a above average SS in our infield and right now Upton is not that player. A switch to 3b will take some of the thinking out of the position play for Upton, but I believe that he wants to make it as a MLB SS. Lets just hope that the work with Ozzie has paid off for Upton this year.
