Are they all covered in soot and eating cheeseburgers?
No, they're eating these:
What is that? Sausage sauercrout and potatoes?
That, my friends, is the "Primanti." It is to Pittsburgh, what the cheesesteak is to Philadelphia. Journey, if you will, into this heart attack of a sandwich.
The Primanti Bros. original sandwhich is thick Italian bread, filled with tomatoes, cole slaw, french fries, corned beef and cheese. As was said though, the sandwiches can technically have any meat you want and the steak and cheese version is probably one of the most popular. I always enjoyed a semi-annual trip to Pittsburgh so I could get "one of those sandwiches with the french fries in it." If you think about it, it's no worse for you than a corned beef sandwich with fries on the side; except in this case, the fries are in the sandwich.
I think it's cool when a city can have a unique sandwich all its own.
