I took a semester long class to do what you plan to do in a single research paper for highschool. Either you go to Harvard High School, or you should think about scaling it back a bit.

Any, CIA fact book worked well for me. Also, Countries often have english based public relation sites put out by their goverments. You can find a lot of info if you sift through their releases.

I'm not sure about all of the other info you're looking for, but I'm positive that the CIA Factbook has this info.

In fact...here: http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fac ... l#Military

That's the page for North Korea...they have it for every country in the world.

It said manpower fit for military, they are not all in the army.

thanks theclefe and danielrp. I'll hold this off for a while. long project.

And no, I am not going to Harvard HS, but I am interested in the name of the course you took theclefe

It was a basic politcal science class, Global Issues, I think. It was years ago. We dealt with a whole slew of things, but I recall it was tough to find definitive numbers on forgein military. I think it is a doable project in two weeks if you focus on a region instead of 20 countries.

This is just my opinion, but I think that regardless of army size, the US would probably be able fend off an attack from any combination of countries except maybe China/England/France/Germany. I think that at this point in our technological advancement, at a certain point, army size is not as relavent as say, nuclear or chemical weapons capabilites. Even if every country in South and Central America and Canada attacked us, even if we were outnumbered, if we really wanted to, we have enough nukes to blow every single one of them off the face of the planet multiple times :-b

You forgot Russia.

No one wins if 2 of the nuclear power goes to a "last man standing" kind of war. US has nukes, so does Russia, so does China, so does Israel potentially.

USA - Has tons of nukes. Can build most advanced fighter jets in the world. Has carriers.

Canada - No nukes. Can't build jets. No carriers.

Mexico - No nukes. Can't build jets. No carriers.

South America - No nukes. I believe Argentina did attempt to build one, but gave up. Can't build jets. No carriers. Had a carrier back in the 80's but the British sunk it.

China - Has nukes. Can build jets but not very advanced ones. No carriers... yet.

Russia. Has tons of nukes. Can build fairly advanced jets. Two carriers I think?

Iran - Will have nukes in a couple years maybe. Can't build jets. No carriers.

N. Korea - Has a few nukes. Can't build jets. No carriers.

Cuba - No nukes. Can't build jets. No carriers. No electricity. Great cigars.

It's pretty much a given that in a conventional war, the U.S. would wipe the floor with all of its enemies. In a nuclear war, otoh, all bets are off the table.

Don't quote me on any of this stuff. This is just off the top of my head. I'm sure Canada can build their own fighters if they wanted to. But no one really takes Canada seriously, eh?

One thing that clearly separates the U.S. military, IMO, from other militaries around the world is the ability to mobilize quickly and efficiently. I think (I could be wrong) China has the largest military as far as manpower goes, but they can't do anything when they're stuck in China. In a conventional war, the U.S. is clearly superior in putting large numbers of troops exactly where they need to be in a timely fashion. However, you can't really talk about a war without talking about nukes unless the other side doesn't have 'em, so it's all moot, anyway.

Of course, this is all just my rambling, so don't go quoting me or whatnot. :-b
