Postby bmd » Fri Jan 06, 2006 6:31 am

Out of these 10 minor league pitchers, how would you rank them based on future promise:

Jon Lester
Chuck James
Scott Baker
Jon Papelbon
Craig Hansen
Jered Weaver
Justin Verlander
Casey Janssen
Yusmeiro Petit
Dustin Nippert

Thanks!

Why do you have Papelbon so low? We saw what he can do at the major league level. If anything I would put him mor toward the top and in front of Verlander. We saw him in two games. Papelbon showed a heck of aot more then Verlander did.

Verlander
Lester
Baker
Petit
Nippert
Weaver
Papelbon
James
Hansen
Janssen

I have a hard time ranking a guy like Hansen because he is a closer while the others are starters.

And since he is talking about future potential, then no, Papelbon is not better than Verlander. It's not even close between those two, not that Papelbon is bad or anything. A couple of not so great spit starts in the majors in his first year of professional ball is no reason to doubt Verlander's potential.

Here is a dark horse guy that has put up decent numbers in the Toronto organization:

Shaun Marcum.

No overwhelming power but great control pitcher. Reminds me a lot of Greg Maddux. Keep an eye on him.

This is always fun to see. I played high school and summer ball with Marcum and consider him a decent friend. He is a great athlete who put up as good of numbers as anyone in A and AA. He hit a bump in AAA last year and I haven't talked to him lately to see what he thought went wrong there but he did get a cup of tea late last year in the Majors and threw 6 scoreless out of the pen. He has great control with all of his pitches and he can throw from pretty much any angle, though i'm sure they have calmed that down in the bigs.

Keep an eye on him for sure. Hes cocky :-b enough to not be scared of anyone in the majors. So pitching inside and going right after guys shouldn't be a problem
