he was once regarded as the top prospect for the padres. he made it to the bigs and was sent back down not too much later. Does he still have a shot at becoming the player many thought he would become???? thanks for any thoughts

he was the #4 overall pick in 2003, but he was never considered their "top" prospect, as Barfield had held that crown since his breakout campaign that very season. (BA had him #5 in 04) and to me he seems like a middle of the rotation guy at best as control is his strength. Pitching in Petco can only help in though.

To be honest, Stauffer's numbers are a lot worse than he actually pitched in the majors last season. He has an outside shot of making the rotation this year and remember, he's still really young. The Padres are nowhere close to giving up on him and I wouldn't be surprised if he made an impact this next season.

If you're in a minor league draft though, I'd take Carrillo before Stauffer.
