Chris Snelling can be a more than adequate 4th outfielder at the major league minimum wage, who can also be in your plans for the future. Matt Lawton isn't. Cast aside that Snelling is the better defender of the two.

I wouldn't hope for Snelling to pull through and do much of anything. This guy is an injury waiting to happen. Given Lawton isn't the picture of health either...

Some could look at it as a sign of desperation. It's not like they signed Juan Gonzalez!

In today's baseball world, a team has to look for a few bargains. This has the potential for a huge upside (ok maybe just favorable results).

Looking at Snelling's numbers from last year this deal makes less sense. Snelling hit 370 last year (granted, in the PCL) with a 450 OBP and did fairly well in limited action with the M's as well. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon so they might as well give the young guys some time to develop. Who knows, maybe they have Lawton penciled in as a 4th OF and insurance if anyone goes down.

I've been on the Snelling train for 3 or 4 years now, but it's always one thing or another with that guy. He's talented definitely, and if he could stay healthy he'd be awesome in LF. That being said, he can't stay healthy for the life of him. Seriously, if he went like a month staying healthy then he would inevitably slip on a banana peel and slip a disc in his back. He's like JD Drew Jr., without the $55M contract. I'd love nothing more than for him to stay healthy for a season and show everyone what he can do, but I wouldn't put money on it.

And regarding Lawton, I don't think it's a horrible move. It's very low risk, and he could do some good things. I like it better than the Everett signing, no doubt about that.
