Ok guys let's hear it. DePodesta would have never been so dumb. Nomar gets 6 mil, with a chance at 8 mil for 1 year at 1b. And you guys rip Seattle for giving a mere 3.4 mil to Everett, who's ops+ was close to Nomars. Nomars career numbers were inflated by Fenway, a 50 point swing in avg. This is a terrible signing, given he could make 8 mil.

Who cares about a one year contract, regardless of the salary anyway? The Dodgers obviously had the money this season or they couldn't have signed him, and they won't be impacted by the deal in any coming season.

How many people do you think Carl Everett will put into the seats?
So we sign people to put fans in seats? I thought winning did that? Cubs attendance dropped following them getting Nomar. How many games has Nomar played at 1B before? None.
SS, true Nomar use to be a force. But his ops+ and rc/27 have been dropping for years. His career numbers were Fenway helped. A .956 Fenway ops versus his .883 road ops. And that includes his good years. He's in Dodger Stadium now. Even his last full year in Boston was a .870 ops. Not bad, but middle of pack at 1B. Given his career splits and decline, i see him lucky to get a .850 ops, which puts him in Shawn Green, Jay Gibbons territory. Would you give them a chance at 8 mil a year?

- Comparing Nomar and Everett is like comparing apples and oranges. Nomar is liked by nearly everyone, he's coming home, and is a financial draw (endorsements, jerseys). Everett has been a headache everywhere he has been and he moves around far too often to generate some sort of 'name' to the casual fan. The game is about winning, but it doesn't take much to win in the NL West...might as well bring home someone the fans can take a liking to.
- Nomar brings a ton of flexibility to the Dodgers. While they already have some sort of situation with Furcal, Izturis, and Kent, having Nomar gives the Dodgers a few more permutations they can make moves-wise. Garciaparra has said he doesn't care where (on the diamond) he plays.
- While Nomar, as you said, would be an average 1b (Shawn Green-like numbers), you're forgetting that that's actually an upgrade for the Dodgers.
I'm not going to defend the Dodgers' offseason moves (acquiring Furcal is ridiculously superfluous), but I think this is the least faulty of them...trying to justify the Everett signing through this signing isn't a great argument.
I don't really have a problem with signing Nomar for 6 million. I thought he would have gone a bit cheaper though as I figured he would have been had for about 4 million in 06. If healthy, the Dodgers are putting together a very tough top of the order with Furcal, Nomar, Kent, and Drew.
