Alright I've got a question to anybody that has a PS2? I'm getting this problem where I'll put any game in (even new ones so I know it is something with the console) and it will just stay on that "Browser/System Configuration" startup screen for a while and then eventually tell me "Disc Read Error". It has been happeneing on and off for a couple months now on my PS2.

So does anyone know what is up with it? I've heard this is pretty common from some people I know.

Yeah. I had this problem a couple of times. Both times I sent it back to them. They said they cleaned and presto!, it worked for about another year before acting up again. There's actually a class action lawsuit out there right now about this. http://www.ps2settlement.com/
That's their website. If you don't have the receipts like me, :-/

, I would recommend taking it to a licensed technician in your area and have them just open it up and clean it out.

Chances are your PS2 overheated at some point. Flip it over and see if it boots up.

This happened to my XBox a few years ago and I wound up buying another one after I found out it would cost $120 to ship it out ($150 for a new one.) I don't know how much of a help that was though. :-b

If you want a cheaper alternative than buying a new one, check ebay. And if you're too young to do ebay (under 18), trust me you're not. I was ebaying all through HS. If you want to know the "trick" just PM me. ;-)

find a friend or guy who is great with electronics, my brother gave one that did the same thing as yours, to a guy in his dorm, and he fixed it for him for 10-20 bucks.

you have to take it apart and clean it out

I had the same problem as you for a little bit. I cleaned out and did adjustments to my PS2 with the help of this guide and it works normally again. It is very detailed and clear with pictures.

My PS2 is an original from Fall/Winter 2000 and still goin strong ;-D

Wish I would have known that after my first PS2 defunked out. I broke it open but never adjusted the eye, cleaned the eye, bought a new eye hoping that'd work, dusted it, just about everything but throwing it. Ended up buying another...

Mine did it too. I sold it on eBay with a note of what it was doing. Still got some decent $$$. Now I have an Xb0x.
