DALLAS The Tigers have reached a tentative agreement with free-agent left-handed starter Kenny Rogers on a two-year, $16 million contract, the Free Press has learned Thursday.
Rogers provides the veteran starting pitcher the Tigers had sought.
The club met its other major off-season priority by signing free-agent closer Todd Jones, whose return to the Tigers was announced Thursday.
Rogers, who turned 41 last month, has had some of the best seasons of his career in recent years with Texas. Two years ago, he won a career-high 18 games. This past season, he went 14-8 with a 3.46 ERA, the seventh-best ERA among American League starters. He pitched for the American League in the All-Star Game at Comerica Park.
In his 17-year big-league career, Rogers is 190-131.
As a left-hander, Rogers should especially enjoy Comerica Park, with its huge distances to left-center.
Rogers joins Jeremy Bonderman, Mike Maroth and Nate Robertson in the starting rotation. The final spot in the five-man rotation is being held open for a young pitcher from the farm system, such as Justin Verlander or Joel Zumaya.
Rogers signing is expected to be announced once he takes and passes a physical.
I just heard this on ESPN radio a while ago and just about crashed my car! What in the hell are the Tigers thinking...
Is the lack of talent that bad for pitching that 41 year old mediocre pitchers are getting 8 million a year!?!? Maybe I should start warming up the ol' wet noodle of mine...I should at least be worth a few hundred thousand a year...

Going to Comerica is good for Rogers' fantasy value. I drafted him late last year and got laughed at big time. It was my plan on draft day to drop him on July 30th regardless of what happened, and I did. Worked out pretty good for me.
I think working with Herschiser helped Rogers a lot last year...his ground ball to fly ball out ratio was way up. Even if he starts relying on the flyball out again, Comerica will protect him.
He'll be 42, but I think he's going to contribute at least one more good fantasy half-season, although wins may be harder to come by because he'll be playing for the Tigers. More starts against the Royals is good though.
