I'd like to reiterate what I've been saying all along, this is a good move all round. Renteria is only a year removed from being touted as the best defensive SS in the national league, and after 1 bad year I'm not willing to throw him under a bus. He can leadoff, which is a bonus, he's no slouch either and he plays with hustle. I like that in a player, see Marcus Giles for example.
One hole filled, like it or not. Now we can move on.

Would like to have seen what Betemit could do given a full time job. This blocks him yet again.
Renteria is severely overpaid and I highly doubt he will ever come close to the offensive numbers he put up in STL.

Wow. Marte for Renteria. I think the Sox win in this deal in the long run. Who's gonna play SS for Boston? Nomar?

That would likely be Julio Lugo, with Huff and Baez (hopefully) joining him in exchange for Marte, Arroyo and Shoppach.
If they can't work something out with Lugo then I'd imagine they'd sign Grudzielanek to cover SS, or let Alex Cora (ugh) play there. I don't think Pedroia's ready yet.

It is, but I think the one year was enough for the front office to see that Edgar for whatever reason couldn't thrive under the pressure, like Clement to a degree. That's not to say Edgar's a bad player, the spotlight just ate him up since he's by all accounts a quiet guy.
