Mark Sweeney signs with SF

Postby Havok1517 » Wed Dec 07, 2005 7:29 pm

Mark Sweeney has agreed to a two-year, $1.8 million contract with the Giants, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The Giants could platoon Sweeney and Lance Niekro at first base and get pretty reasonable production, but they'll probably keep looking for another left-handed-hitting first baseman, allowing Sweeney to be used primarily as a pinch-hitter. Sweeney hit .294/.395/.466 in 221 AB for the Padres last season. Dec. 7 - 6:06 pm et

A great pinch-hitter!

Sweeney could be a good everyday player if he ever got the opportunity. Good signing for San Fran.

Not the power SF was looking for, IMO they should trade over Overbay and maybe go after Soranio.

edit: was Durham signed?

Who would they give for Overbay? They need relief and a 1B, the Brewers ahve the players but SF doesn't seem to have anything they want besides the untouchable Cain, Lowry, or Valdez. So...?

I've heard Valdez is touchable. Putting together Nikero and Vladez is a nice package.

But Valdez is pretty much the same pitcher as Capallan, not sure if he's a starter or a reliever but he sure has great stuff.

Valdez does have great stuff. I saw him pitch in A ball and he was hitting 97 in the 7th inning. 8-o He's pretty old for a prospect though.

Valdez is a reliever now, but he has constant control problems. He is definitely touchable. I like this signing for us, we got him for a relatively cheap price and if we can't get a different 1st basemen, Sweeny/Neikro would make an ok 1st base platoon untill Neikro learns to hit righties. At the lesat, he will be a solid pinch-hitter.

Eftda, I'm pretty sure that Durham is under contract for the upcoming year.

Durham is signed, he picked up his player option.

I guess the signing of Sweeney will signal the end of J.T. Snow.
What happens with Feliz and Alfonzo over at 3rd now.

Guess SF isn't getting Overbay. Alfonzo sits on the bench in SF.
