When given the opportunity in Boston, he had some decent offfensive numbers. Arguably the best backup C in baseball is going to be third string in SD?

4. Klesko

6. Castilla

8. Olivio (Maybe Laird)
Castilla and Roberts need to be replaced!!!
NO WAY! Olivo is terrible. He hit 214 last year. he has a .664 career OPS. Maribelli is the starter.

it's official...
Red Sox acquired second baseman Mark Loretta from the Padres for catcher Doug Mirabelli.
The trade gives Loretta a bonus for 2006, so he'll earn $3.75 million before becoming a free agent next winter. The Red Sox will use him as their second baseman and bat him second or maybe leadoff if Johnny Damon leaves. Loretta slipped to .280/.360/.347 during a 2005 season in which he was limited by a thumb injury. In 2004, he was one of the 10 or 12 best players in the NL while hitting .335/.391/.495. He should show a little more power at Fenway, making him an above average regular. Dec. 7 - 8:17 pm et

The Padres still only freed 1.5 mil from this trade... I really think they could've gotten more for Loretta. There's not many 2B that're as good (or cheap, even if its for one year) as Loretta. He's not bad defensively and has a career .365 obp which is very good for a 2B. I think he'll do very well hitting 2nd in the Sox linup providing he's healthy.
