Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
5-15 with a 4.90 ERA in 30 starts for Pittsburg last year
That translates into what for KC...? 2-19 with a 5.69 ERA in 28 starts?
Another crap pitcher...great! What's next for us...a Carl Everett signing?!?...

This deal makes a ton of sense for the Pirates and goes a long way to make up for the salary they added in the Casey deal. Now they should still have the flexibility to make some moves and add additional salary.
According to the Kansas City Star this deal has no bearing on the negotiations for Benson. Apparently KC is "going for it" this season.

Well, the move will probably help Redman's ERA numbers, and his win numbers should be up from 5 as well, presuming he stays healthy. He could actually post a sub-4.00 ERA with 10-12 wins, I think, not entirely horrible.
Good move by Baird. Always hurts to see someone with the potential of Bayliss go, but the Royals are stocked with young bullpen arms and needed to make a move for some veteran starters. With Carrasco heading to Japan plus Lima and Anderson heading someplace as far from KC as possible there is a definite need to get inning eaters to help keep Wood and Gobble from being put in the rotation. Redman isn't spectacular, but at $4.5 million he fills a role that the Royals weren't going to find at a reasonable price on the free agent market.
