The Astros are leaning toward not offering Roger Clemens arbitration before Wednesday's deadline, something that would make him ineligible to pitch for the team before May 1.
The logical option is for the Astros to offer arbitration under the condition that Clemens will reject it, extending their negotiating window until Jan. 8
I'm sure this will happen. Clemens will be back!

that would be nice.
oh and how come he wouldn't be allowed to even pitch for them until may 1? is that just the rule? it seems kinda silly to me to keep him from playing as opposed to the normal rules where you just can't negotiate with someone if you don't sign them by a certain day.

Yes, if the Astros do not offer Clemens arbitration then they can not make Clemens a offer again until May 1 of 06.
I think this really puts the Astros in a bind. As much as he faltered physically down the stretch, maybe he'd be better off starting the year May 1.
If the Astros do not offer him arbitration, and he decides to play, there will be plenty of teams lining up at his doorstep. Yankees, Bosox, Mets, Dodgers, Texas, Baltimore, to name a few.

Rotoworld mentioned the Yankees, Red Sox or Rangers as possibilities. Those are probably the only teams he'd go to, IMO. Of course, that's just an assumption.
You can't expect Clemens to decide if he wants to play before he's ready, but he really puts a vice on the 'Stros, who can't spend money on anyone else for a long time while he decides. I think they have to move on and try to improve the team as if he isn't going to be there. Maybe he'll take a pay cut and play for them later on, but that probably isn't likely.
Boston - I think those bridges are burned but I would love to see him in a Red Sox uniform. Finish your career where it started Beckett, Schill, Clemens
