I would be comfortable making that deal but that is the most I would give for Zito plus I would want a window to sign him to a long term extension. Not many opportunities to be able to aquire a 28 year old lefty who has already won a cy young. With Pedro history of not being able to make it through the entire season and Glavine in the last year of his deal I think this is a must move for the Mets.

That article doesn't really indicate anything new. The problem is that the Mets and A's don't have a great fit as far as a trade involving Zito. Amazinz and I have talked trade and came close to working something out so maybe we should give the GM's a call. ;-)

Apparently the Mets have cleared the extension hurdle. Some sources are reporting that the Mets (with Oakland's permission) have already set the parameters for the extension. Others are reporting that Zito has made it clear that he would sign an extension but there hasn't been any actual dialogue. Beane has left Dallas so it does not look like this trade would get done this week but maybe further on down the road. Supposedly the unnamed player in the Benson to KC deal is a player chosen by the A's. There are a lot of conflicting reports/rumors so who knows.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

As a Braves fan, if the Mets give up Millidge AND Heilman for Zito, I will be ecstatic.

Zito's mentality is a question mark. So yeah, I wouldn't do this deal if I were Omar.

It's not like Zito is coming from KC or TB, he has pitched in pennant races and playoff games - he knows pressure. And he wont have to be the number 1 starter in NY. I'm not sure if the mentality question mark is that big of a deal considering what he has been through already. This is a great move if it happens for the Mets as the staff needs attention. They still need a few spare parts in the pen and the lineup is fine.

He's enjoyed more success at home. His numbers in NY, BOS are mediocre at best. Against them at home or away are pretty shoddy also.

Obviously it's tough to make an argument this way but my immediate reaction after looking at those numbers is that he will not be that successful in NY.

Well, I'm more on the "NY losing two top prospects for a mediocre (and likely soon-to-be-overpaid) pitcher" vein, but yeah, if Zito has a mental breakdown from playing in NY, that'd be cool, too. ;-7

Also, I don't think his stats against Boston and NYY will necessarily translate to his stats against the Nats and Marlins. ;-)

Is he going to be facing the Yanks or Boston next yr? He is going to a division that isnt necessarily known for its hitting prowess (except for maybe the Mets next yr). As well, he will be facing a pitcher every 9 batters which will improve his stats. USUALLY, when pitchers move to the NL, their stats improve.
